Hi, my name is Jared White, I am the co-founder and lead architect at Mariposta. Today, I want to show you how to set up your profile, create a collection, and post an article.
Here is a new profile, I have not added anything, it is exactly what you might see right after you have signed up. Let's start by editing our profile. Just click this button here and then we have a few settings.
First of all, we need a new avatar because this generic one here is not what we want. Let's pick a file, I have one here I my folder that I like. I am going to upload my image. And here we go. Let's rename our profile title here, this could be the name of your organization or your own name. I'll put in my name here. let's see, I think I'll put in my tag line "Excited to demo this for you today."
You can also add a bio or some kind of description. It is the opening text for your website. I'll just write something here real quick. OK. We have a couple of profile styles we could select from if we had upgraded to the Pro plan, but, I will just stick with the default. Now, there are some optional settings as well, you can link to another website, if you have one, you can link to your Facebook page at Twitter but, we are going to leave that alone for now. Let's go ahead and save changes. And here's our profile.
Next, let's create our first collection. To do that, we are going to go to our collections dashboard. Right now, we do not have any collections so, let's start a new one. We have a number of themes available that we can choose from for our collection, some different styles that are available. This one is nice and simple, let's pick that. Now, we are going to name our collection. I want to create a whole collection all about butterflies so, that is what I am going to put in right here. We are done, we have created our first collection.
Every collection has a cover page at the beginning and a back page at the end and in the middle you can create any number of posts. A post is an article, perhaps a full screen photo, maybe a YouTube video, any main piece of content that you want to add and we are going to create those.
Let's start by editing our cover page. It has copied in our title. My window is actually kind of small here so, I am going to go ahead and pick Styles and make this font size a little bit smaller. Good. Let's pick an image to use for our cover. You can bring in your images a couple of different ways.
The first is, you can upload a file directly from your computer or if you are using iPad you can do that if you are running iOS version 6, or you can use the CloudStamp feature which allows you to connect with services like Dropbox or Flicker to download images right off those online services. But, for this demo, we are just going to directly upload a file. I want to pick this image for my cover, let's go ahead and do that, save. There we go, that looks great.
We can either go back to our dashboard or we can immediately create a new post by clicking the button here so, I am going to do that. Here are a couple of different templates we have available in this theme: Simply Stated. I am going to go ahead and pick the basic post that is good for articles. I am going to insert it right after our cover page. Let's go ahead and give this a title. You will want to check that your slug is something that you want people to see when they are looking at the address bar of the browser. The easiest way is to click this button and it will generate one from the title that you have typed in. This is great for SEO, you can customize this to add keywords if you want. Let's go ahead and save our title.
What's great about our Chrysalis Presentation Engine is that you can always see exactly what you are editing and it is easy to edit text and drop in images. You just click these little overlay buttons and add in your content. Let's go ahead and click Edit Text here...instead of typing in a whole bunch of text here, I am actually going to go ahead and paste in what I have in my clipboard. Thank you Wikipedia. This looks good, maybe add a paragraph break here.
You might want to highlight a couple of things so, let's make that bold. This looks kind of big, maybe I should make that italics to signify that is a special term. It looks good for now. We can toggle the HTML view if you want to add in some customized HTML tags if you are that sort of person but, for now, we are going to keep this real simple. Let's go ahead and save, and here is what it looks like.
I have a space for an image down here...if we did not even want an image we could actually go ahead and click styles and click on our image and hide it. But, I think I do actually want to keep the image here. Let's go ahead and pick Select Image, we are going to upload a file we have on our computer. I found this one that I like that shows a butterfly merging from its chrysalis. Let's go ahead and pick that, we will save, and here is our new image.
This looks good, let's go ahead and publish our post so that it is officially part of our collection. Oh, wait! What does this say? Your collection is currently marked private. So, when you first create a collection it is set to private. It is locked from public view so, even if you publish an individual post you will not be able to let the public see it until you unlock your collection. It works like this so that you can add a whole bunch of posts and when you are feeling ready you can then release it to the world.
What we are going to do here is we are going to publish our post. Then we are going to go to the main menu, go back to the control panel for current collection, and we are going to unlock for public access. That's it, "can the public access this collection" is yes. We have published our post, let's see what it looks like.
Here we are! This is our cover page and since we are on a desktop computer we can click the left and right arrow buttons or use our keyboard to flip to the next page. Here is the article we have posted and our image, and we even have it in the table of contents that you can see here "Lifecycle of the Monarch". If you had a bunch more posts that you published, they would all be listed here so, people could access them in any order.
You can also write comments on a post. You can share a post on services like Facebook and Twitter, and this handy menu here allows you to see who posted the collection and you can go back to the cover page or bring up contents. And the about page on the end, you can access it here. Since I am the creator of this collection I have these extra two buttons so, that I can edit the collection and go to my profile settings if I want to.
Let's go back to our profile. You can see here we now have the Secret World of Butterflies in our collections list and easy to open it up and view it would the public at large.
And that's all for our tour! It's that's easy to get started with web publishing using Mariposta. Thank you.
